Grading Standards for Scholarship and Citizenship

In implementing the board policy on grading standards, the following guidelines shall be observed:

Grading

The following letter grades will be utilized to evaluate a student’s scholarship and citizenship grade on semester report cards and progress reports:

Criteria for Letter Grades in Scholarship

1. A student merits a grade of “A” if he/she:
   1. Produces work that is superior in every respect and consistently scores an “A” on tests, daily work, and other assignments.
   2. Always completes assigned work and always completes make-up work when absent; completes challenging independent work which shows creativity and originality.
   3. Demonstrates knowledge of facts and principles and applies them to new and unfamiliar situations.
   4. Understands most objectives and works accurately with few errors.
   5. Participates actively in class activities, shows leadership, asks engaging questions, and is an outstanding contributor to class activities.
2. A student merits a grade of “B” if he/she:
   1. Produces work that is above average, usually exceeds class standards on daily work, test, and other assignments.
   2. Consistently completes assigned work and does make-up work when absent; may complete some independent, challenging work showing competence and originality.
   3. Demonstrates knowledge of facts and principles and demonstrates ability to apply them in familiar situations.
   4. Understands most objectives and works accurately with few errors.
   5. Participates actively and shows some leadership; asks appropriate questions; contributes to class activities.
3. A student merits a grade of “C” if he/she:
   1. Meets class standards on daily work, tests, and other assignments.
   2. Usually turns in assigned work when due; usually makes up work when absent; completes required class assignments and works at a satisfactory level of accuracy.
   3. Usually demonstrates knowledge of facts and principles and usually demonstrates ability to apply them in familiar situations.
   4. Usually understands objectives and works satisfactorily with some errors.
   5. Participates in and follows class discussions; asks questions; makes contributions and participates in other class activities.
4. A student merits a grade of “D” if he/she:
   1. Consistently performs below class standards on tests, daily work, and other assignments.
   2. Does substantially less than average amount of work; usually does not make up work missed when absent; seldom completes required class assignments and works at an unsatisfactory level of accuracy.
   3. Sometimes demonstrates knowledge of facts and principles and frequently cannot demonstrate ability to apply them in familiar situations.
   4. Understands only a few objectives and works inaccurately with many errors.
   5. Seldom takes part in class activities; rarely contributes to class discussion; is often inattentive.
5. A student merits the grade of “F” if he/she:
   1. Consistently fails to meet standards on tests, daily work, and other assignments.
   2. Does not complete or meet minimum requirements; seldom or never does assigned work or class tests, rarely makes up work missed when absent; usually does not complete required class assignments and works at an unsatisfactory level of accuracy.
   3. Shows little knowledge of facts and principles and cannot apply them in familiar situations.
   4. Rarely understands objectives and works inaccurately with many errors.
   5. Rarely takes part in class activities; rarely contributes to class discussion; is often inattentive.

Criteria for Letter Grades in Citizenship

Students will be assigned a grade every 6 weeks. The grades will be based on attendance and behavior (respecting others, following teacher directions, bringing materials to class). Students who accrue any combination of 5 tardies or truancies to any class will receive an automatic F in citizenship. Students may clear any combination of 5 tardies/truancies for one class by attending Saturday School. Students with a GPA below 2.0 in citizenship will be ineligible for all extracurricular activities (including band, cheer, etc.)
