For the past four months, Castle Park High teacher Sylvia McBride has partnered with the California Geographic Alliance (CGA) based at SDSU to develop curriculum that connects the very real human nature of geography to the physical realities of our globe. The CGA recommended Sylvia to be the first high school teacher in California to be trained and certified by the National Geographic Society to teach the district’s new Human Geography curriculum.
McBride recently spent a week in Washington, DC with 24 other teachers in the first round of this special pilot program. The new curriculum demonstrates global interdependence and is designed to encourage students to objectively judge economic, political and environmental matters involving this interdependence between the physical environment and human society.
McBride has already been a part of the team developing the new Human Geography curriculum at the district level and is excited about the new opportunities from her relationship with National Geographic.
